A firefighter's kit comes back from the wash looking clean. The soot's gone, the smell's faded, and the tunic's back on the peg ready for the next shout. Job done, or so it seems.
But looking clean and being clean are two different things, and our independent analysis shows just how far apart they can be. This isn't a rounding error or a minor shortfall. When we tested the kit against verified laboratory standards, the results told a very different story from what the eye had already decided.
Why this matters now
Since 2022, when the International Agency for Research on Cancer reclassified occupational firefighting as carcinogenic to humans, the conversation around PPE has changed for good. Firefighters now carry a raised cancer risk of up to 40% compared with the general population, and contaminated kit is one of the few exposure routes a service can actually do something about.
That's why decontamination, and particularly PPE and SCBA facemask cleaning, is getting more scrutiny now than we've seen in years. Procurement teams are asking harder questions, and rightly so. The rise of electric vehicle and lithium-ion battery fires hasn't helped matters either; the smoke they produce carries residues and particles that are, if anything, worse than what you'd get from a conventional structure fire.
What's actually in the fabric
Soot and smoke aren't one simple substance. They're a cocktail of combustion by-products, and among the nastier ones are polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, or PAHs, particles small enough to be absorbed through the skin and inhaled long after the incident's over.
The trouble is, soot doesn't just sit on the surface waiting to be brushed off. It binds to the plastics, rubbers and painted surfaces found all over modern PPE, working its way into weaves, coatings and seams. And once it's in there, it takes more than a standard wash to shift it.

Why conventional washing falls short
Most laundry programmes were designed around everyday soiling, not the chemistry of structural fire residue, and it shows. Cycles are often too short to give contaminants time to break down. Temperatures are set for comfort and fabric preservation rather than for disrupting the bond between soot and substrate. And general-purpose detergents, however good they are at everyday dirt, simply aren't formulated for the carcinogenic load fire kit picks up on the job.
Put all that together and you get a garment that passes a visual check but would fail a laboratory one every time.
The five pillars
There's no single trick to proper decontamination. It comes down to five things working together, each pulling its weight:
- Detergent quantity and quality — the right chemistry, in the right dose, for combustion residue rather than general grime.
- Temperature — hot enough to break the bond between contaminant and fabric, without damaging the technical layers underneath.
- Time — long enough for the detergent to actually do its job, not just rinse through.
- Agitation — enough mechanical action to reach into seams and weaves where contamination hides.
- Rinsing — thorough enough to carry contaminant away rather than redistribute it through the load.
Skimp on one and the other four have to work harder to make up for it. Get all five right, though, and the results hold up, wash after wash.

None of this is theoretical. It's backed by accredited before-and-after testing, carried out independently in Sweden and Germany, and proven in the field across more than 700 brigades.
The cost myth
There's a common assumption that proper decontamination means expensive kit and elaborate processes. It doesn't. When done according to the correct protocol, water-based washing removes more than 90% of contamination, with no special chemistry or costly equipment required.
