Thomas Telford School, one of England’s most successful state secondary schools, has implemented an advanced safety solution designed to improve incident response and reduce confusion during emergencies.
As part of the school’s commitment to modernising its safety protocols, the leadership team sought a way to clearly communicate emergency alerts without relying on traditional fire alarm systems. The aim was to eliminate ambiguity and ensure that students and staff could easily distinguish between different types of emergency scenarios.

To achieve this, Thomas Telford School adopted the Identi-Cryer Voice Sounders from Vimpex, a leading provider of alarm and voice messaging technologies. The Identi-Cryer system delivers clear, pre-recorded voice messages that identify the nature of the alert, such as 'Evacuation' or 'Invacuation', providing unambiguous alerts that guide staff and students through the appropriate response.
The system was installed by Alarm and Vision, with Ian Crompton leading the integration. The result is a cost-effective, voice-based emergency communication solution that strengthens safety and minimises risk.
“We believe utilising voice messaging greatly reduces the risk of occupants being unsure as to which alarm situation is being signalled and thus avoid situations whereby occupants evacuate the building when they should be locking down.” - Ian Crompton
By embracing this innovative technology, Thomas Telford School continues to pioneer new approaches not just in education but in ensuring the safety and well-being of its students and staff.
